The Murphy Strut was commissioned several years ago by the Martin Murphy Middle School Jazz Ensemble in Morgan Hill, California. It’s a hard-driving blues shuffle that features tenor sax with optional solos for other players in the band. There is plenty of variety in the chart from unison lines to 3-part counterpoint. Written in the style of Bob Mintzer, but playable by a young band.
